Karel Lambert

Karel Lambert is a division chief (Belgian Rank: major) with the Brussels Fire Department and a company officer (Belgian rank: sergeant) in Oostkamp, his home town. He is an internationally recognized instructor and participated in training programs in 14 countries worldwide.

Karel combines master degrees in civil engineering, in occupational safety and health with a master of science in fire safety engineering. He is also a guest professor within Ghent University.

Karel is a co-author of 3 books and wrote 64 articles about firefighting.

Samenvatting

Op 20 augustus 2020 wordt de brandweer van Brussel geconfronteerd met een hevige uitslaande brand in een oud appartementsgebouw met 13 verdiepingen. De brand situeert zich op de 11de verdieping. Het gebouw dateert van voor de brandpreventienormen en er is slechts één traphal in plaats van de twee die normaal verplicht zijn. Het betreft bovendien een smalle spiltrap. Er is geen stijgleiding in het gebouw dus er is binnen geen bluswater. Daarnaast is het buiten erg warm en wordt het gebouw blootgesteld omgekeerd schoorsteeneffect. Als klap op de vuurpijl zijn er een aantal bewoners bevangen door de rook en geraken ze niet zelfstandig buiten. De brandweer staat voor een uitdaging.

August 20th 2020, the Brussels Fire Department is confronted with a fierce fire in an old 13-story high-rise building. The fire is raging on the 11th floor. The building was erected before fire prevention legislation took effect and there is only one staircase where one would expect two. Moreover, it was a narrow spiral staircase. There is no water riser in the building so the fire service lacks water to attack the fire. Next, it is very hot outside and the building is subject to reverse stack effect.
